mumbo gumboMumbo Gumbo blends many genres, from rock to soul, afropop to lush balladry, zydeco to country, into a celebratory, danceable noise. Over nearly 20 years, on the septet’s eight albums and during countless gigs around their native Northern California, Mumbo Gumbo has created something that is less a specific style than a particular feeling: The sound of sheer joy.

Or, as one of the band's songs puts it, "That big life feeling."

Fronted by two first-rate singer/songwriters, Chris Webster and Tracy Walton, the band is anchored and driven by one of the longest-lived rhythm sections in Northern California: drummer Rick Lotter and bassist Lynn Michael Palmer. With Reggy Marks' sax, Jon Wood's guitar, and Steve Stizzo's keyboards fleshing out the band's expansive sound, Gumbo has built a reputation not just for danceability, but for creative depth.

“A folk-pop trio from Seattle, performs funny original songs whose exquisite musical detail and subtle needling wit attain a level of craft not often seen in pop” -- NY Times

Seattle folk-pop legends Uncle Bonsai “perform funny original songs whose exquisite musical detail and subtle needling wit attain a level of craft not often seen in pop” (NYTimes). Virtuosic harmonizers, the trio sings intricate arrangements that owe as much to the Beatles (or the Turtles) as Sondheim, and even classical motets. “The trio officially bills itself as a "folk" outfit, but has none of the naiveté that label might suggest.” (Seattle Times)

dan hicks and the hot licksBeginning as a drummer in the seminal 60’s San Francisco rock band The Charlatans, and continuing with his unique and legendary Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks, Dan Hicks is widely acknowledged as one of the defining figures in American roots music. Having earned a reputation as a true original with his signature eclecticism and humor, Hicks continues to carve his way through a number of genres from proto-psychedelia to western swing and jazz, from tin pan alley to country blues -- all the while cultivating his own unique sound.

The original Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks recorded five ground-breaking and Billboard-charting records for the Columbia, Blue Thumb and Warner Bros. labels. They toured worldwide, and Dan appeared on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine three times.

Throughout the 60s and 70s there was no one who sounded at all like Dan Hicks & the Hot Licks, and remarkably, nearly 40 years later, there still isn't. We now find ourselves again in an age of introspective sensitive singer-songwriters. Luckily for us, throughout the past decade and amidst the new wave of freak folk that prides itself on its eclecticism, Dan has re-assembled the Hot Licks. Getting back into the swing of regularly recording and touring, he has proven once again that the king of hipster-chic will always be Dan Hicks.

jeffery broussard and the creole cowboys"Jeffery Broussard has long been respected as one of the greatest accordion players to ever grace our beautiful Creole culture and for that matter the world." - Don Cravins, Sr., Mayor of Opelousas, LA, Zydeco Capital of the World.

One of the most influential accordionists and vocalists in modern Zydeco music, Jeffery Broussard continues to be one of the genre’s most dynamic performers. He has continually been an innovator, beginning his career with traditional Creole Zydeco music playing drums in his father’s band, Delton Broussard & The Lawtell Playboys, then moving on to develop the nouveau Zydeco sound in Zydeco Force, now returning to the more traditional Zydeco sound with his own band, Jeffery Broussard and The Creole Cowboys.

He has range seldom seen in Zydeco - from traditional songs from the old masters to originals, singlenote and triple-note accordion to fiddle. Whether he is playing a festival stage in front of thousands of dancers, a small theater of seated patrons, giving an interview, teaching a lesson or playing at a trailride, his warmth, love of the music, and talent shine. Jeffery Broussard is well, the real deal. Dedicated to preserving and promoting the Creole culture and traditional Zydeco music, Jeffery plays with passion and commitment to carry on his daddy’s legacy.

The Deadly Gentlemen

the deadly gentlemen Starting out a couple years ago as "an experimental spoken word bluegrass band," (doesn't that sound commercially viable?) The Deadly Gentlemen are now playing what they call a mix of "epic folk and grasscore." What does this mean? Well, there are five band members: Greg Liszt (also of Crooked Still), banjo and vocals; Stash Wyslouch, guitar and vocals; Mike Barnett, fiddle and vocals; Dominick Leslie, mandolin and vocals; and Sam Grisman, double bass and vocals.

Instead of having a lead singer, they use a nonstop orchestration of somewhat unconventional vocals, with everybody in the band doing everything they can. Expect a lot of three-part harmony singing, group shouting, really dense rhymes and an almost rap-like phrasing. Their songs have kind of a rock ‘n’ roll feel, despite the acoustic bluegrass instrumentation.

the deadly gentlemenSome of their songs started out as miniature epic poems based on folk songs. That’s where the term “epic folk” comes from. The grasscore songs are the ones where everybody in the band throws caution to the wind and goes completely berserk. Kind of the punk or hardcore mentality, but applied to bluegrass. And please... don’t call it a boy band!

mollie o'brien rich mooreMollie O'Brien and Rich Moore are two national musical treasures. Combining blues and bluegrass (and everything in-between) with their soulful voices and stunning instrumental chops, Mollie and Rich are a constant source of joy and inspiration to me. They are truly among the best out there keeping American music alive and vital.” - Dave Alvin

“We do not have another singer like Mollie O'Brien - she stands and delivers in a completely, original way -- no matter the material. Together Mollie and Rich have made a sure and honest recording of Saturday nights and Sunday mornings that runs as deep as family.” - Songwriter Darrell Scott

Mollie O’Brien sings. Does she ever. Jazz, R&B, blues, gospel, southern mountain traditional — you name it. And she approaches each with an ease that makes you think she was steeped in the style since the first time a note left her throat.

Rich Moore is well-known and well-loved in Colorado's acoustic music family and has lived and performed here for over 25 years. He made his reputation early on as bassist and guitarist with stellar local outfits like The Solid Senders, and in recent years has been the rhythmic bedrock for Pete Wernick's Live Five, Celeste Krenz, and with ensembles fronted by his wife, the internationally-esteemed vocalist Mollie O'Brien. He is guitarist of choice for folk legend Tom Paxton, who invariably requests Moore as a sideman for his Colorado shows.
